What I wish I knew when I first became a product manager...
When I transitioned into a full-time product management role coming from the world of Entrepreneurship and Electrical Engineering, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I just knew I loved solving problems.
But looking back, here are a few things I wish someone had told me earlier:
1. You are not the Boss
Truly speaking, PMs don’t have that level of authority. They can only influence with their research, gather data, and communicate clearly. In my opinion, great PMs do not tell everyone what to do, and they do not step on designers' or engineers' toes. Great PMs empower designers, engineers, and other team members to implement the work with their understanding of the product. However, if the Team doesn’t align with the product, then the PM should guide them.
2. Prioritization is the most Important key
I remember when I started my career, I also faced the challenges in prioritization because I was also confused about which to feature prioritize first: Customer pain points, stakeholder suggestions But I will tell one thing if you want great success in any field then you have to learn say “No” Because saying “yes” will not make lot changes but saying “No” will sure make lot good changes in your life and product. So I always prioritize according to company goals.
3. It is okay not to have all the answer
As a new PM, it’s completely fine if you don’t know everything. I often hear developers say, “If I don’t understand something, I keep asking questions until I’m 100% clear.
