Around 38% students from TOP IITs remained unplaced this year's
I don't see this as a "seasonal thing" or " being unlucky" anymore
Things are going to get worse from here
Students from tier 1 institutes had bunch of job offers to chose from
The dominance of placement cells of tier 1 institute was so strong that
they had the power to ban companies from their hiring cycles
This year, I saw many such colleges struggling to attract the right set of companies to hire
Placements cells reaching out to their alums and corporates for help
Professors posting on LinkedIn appealing for support
Students reaching out to their seniors about the same
What just happened here?
How did things change in just a couple of years?
This is a testament of three things
[1] Companies are changing their approach to bring freshers in
[2] Campus placements are losing their charms
[3] Just being dependent on your placement cells is not an option anymore
While the [1] & [2] are not under your control
[3] certainly is!
India is now slowly moving to a skill based economy where your college
degrees are not necessarily the ONLY thing that would work to sell yourself
Apart from your college degree, you would need
[1] some cool projects
[2] solid internships
[3] extra curricular
[4] soft skills
[4] and ofcourse decent GPA
All of the above would require you to do more
than just attending classes and submitting assignments
It will require you to
[1] Do courses and read books apart from academics
[2] Be proactive to network with people
[3] Learn skills to build a side project
[4] Work on your soft skills along with your hard skills
[5] Learn time management to balance all of the above
.
.
The list is endless
All you need to do is to be PROACTIVE from day 1
And not wait until your final year to realise that
placement cycle / economy / government is not in your favour
Rather than being labelled the "unlucky batch"
because of some external factors
Start from day 1, to create enough dust and entropy that
you end up increasing your surface area of being lucky
All this wisdom doesn't come from a
Self proclaimed LinkedIn career coach but
A former college students who had a below average GPA
but was fortunate to have support from great people
Much Gratitude to all of them!!
