5 Uncommon Myths About Product Managers. Myth 1 : PMs are the "CEO" of the Product. Reality: PMs take product-level decisions but don't have CEO-level authority. They collaborate with teams and stakeholders to drive outcomes. Myth 2: PMs only focus on building new products. Reality: They oversee the entire product lifecycle—improving existing products, keeping up with trends, and addressing user challenges. Myth 3: PMs dictate the product roadmap. Reality: Roadmaps are a team effort! PMs align inputs from users, market research, and stakeholders to shape the vision. Myth 4: PMs are all about technical details. Reality: While technical know-how helps, PMs balance user needs, market demands, and business goals. Soft skills matter just as much. Myth 5: PMs only oversee development. Reality: Beyond building, PMs work on go-to-market strategies, customer insights, and monitoring product performance. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿, 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗲. Solid breakdown, myth #1 is the one I see most often misused. Calling PMs the ‘CEO of the product’ sets the wrong expectation; the real skill is influence without authority. I’d even add another myth: PMs always need to be extroverts, quiet PMs often drive clarity and impact just as strongly.
